Insurance for runs leaders

Postby bernievarilone » October 18th, 2009, 5:21 pm

Dear All
Further to the AGM today I did a quick search on the National CTC website and followed their link through to info regarding insurance. I would suggest that anyone who wishes to confirm the procedures required of them as leaders in order to ensure that their insurance as a leader is valid may like to look at this.

As I'm leading a ride in about a month's time, and I was recently told the advice given at the last AGM was incorrect, I'm interested to know the facts about insurance cover.

From the CTC information referenced by sixspeed, salient paragraphs seem to be [Underlining and colour are my emphases; emboldening is CTC's]:
In the Organiser's Liability Cover Fact Sheet, the CTC wrote:You are covered while you are a fully paid up individual member of CTC other than as an Introductory Member and have been registered with CTC by your Member Group as a volunteer.

You are covered provided the ride / event is run in accordance with any guidance issued by CTC and in particular that you are aware of all participants on the ride / event, either through collection of name and CTC membership number or by completion of an entry form.

So the issues are these:

  1. Are all ride leaders shown in the Runs List registered as volunteers with the CTC? Who does this on behalf of the ride leaders?
  2. What is this guidance issued by CTC? Where is it to be seen? (Why doesn't the document hyperlink to it?)
  3. Clearly names of all participants (both members and non-members) need to be known. This is, indeed, different from the advice given at the AGM, where we were told names of non-CTC members (only) were to be taken.

One guideline is explained in the CTC information:
In the Organiser's Liability Cover Fact Sheet, the CTC wrote:A CTC guideline is therefore that there should not be more than 5 non-members on any one ride, nor should a non-member participate in a CTC ride more than 5 times. This limitation does not apply to events registered with CTC.
